The annual City Leaders for a Day program was held at the October City Council Meeting. Congratulations and thanks to St. Gregory the Great Principal, Ms. Cortez and her staff, for working with the City on the project. 6th, 7th and 8th grade students submitted an essay on based on four questions:
1. Why would you like to be a Balcones Heights City Leader for a Day?
2. If you were the Mayor or City Administrator, what service would you create?
3. How did you come up with your idea?
4. Why is it important for people to be involved in city government?
Student essays shared so many great ideas and observations of how to improve our City and community. We thank the judges who read and scored each essay and the Balcones Heights Police Officer’s Association for their donation to purchase gift cards for the finalists. The selected students and their families toured city facilities, including the fire station and police department operations, and enjoyed a reception in their honor. Students led the prayer, pledges, presentations and read the proclamations before turning over the business of the meeting to Mayor and Council.
Congratulations to City Leaders for a Day finalists: Paloma Ortega, Mayor; Mathew Chairez, Mayor Pro Tem; and Anderson Davis, City Administrator.
